My Day on the Sew Much Fun Blog Tour

>> Sunday, June 26, 2022

Welcome to Week 48 of the Sew Much Fun Tour

Each week a designer will be presenting a 6" (6 1/2" unfinished) block on the theme of sewing.
This is my week and I'm happy to share a scrappy patchwork block with you.

Scrappy S block

Scrappy S block Sew Much Fun Tour

I originally came up with this block when finding a way to use up the waste triangles in projects. I took the cuttings, sewed a 1/4 " seam then trimmed the half square triangles to a consistent size and then arranged them to form an "S". I had seen the "H" quilt by Kaffe Fassett and thought it would be fun to have an "S" quilt because my first name - and maiden name - both start with S.

I have a collection of these S blocks from the last 11 years of my quilting life and still haven't made a quilt with them! LOL! This photo is from my post in April 2012 :)

For the blog tour I thought about words related to quilting that start with S:
sew
stitch
seam
scraps
selvage
scissors

and Starlight! My newest quilt pattern :)

I realized this simple patchwork block would be a great addition to this tour's variety of sewing themed blocks.

You don't have to use waste fabrics; for this project I used leftover background fabrics and colors from the blocks I had already made so my S would match the other blocks.

Second pieced block

Earlier in the tour I designed an alternative patchwork block in case there were other quilters looking for more pieced blocks. Also, I pretty much include a churn dash block in everything I make :) This block can also be made using scraps from other tour blocks so it coordinates.

My Sew Much Fun Tour blocks

Here is the collection of blocks from the tour that I have made so far! At this point I have enough for a fun sewing themed cushion cover or wall quilt. We'll see what I decide :)

Sew Much Fun Tour Continues into Next Year!

>> Tuesday, December 28, 2021

I thought I would pop in this reminder before the year is over that the Sew Much Fun Tour continues into next year!

There are several designers who are still lined up to share their own sewing themed blocks - me included :)

You can find all previous blocks listed on the main site here - Sew Much Fun Tour.

You can also click on the image above to go to the main site.

This week features Laura at Orange Blossom Quilt Design Studio - you can find her block here: pins and pincushion

Last week was Raylee at Sunflower Stitcheries and Quilting

and before that Andi and True Blue Quilts

and Jennifer at Inquiring Quilter

Starting us off in 2021 is Rona at Rona the Ribbiter

followed by Susan at QuiltFabrication

then Jen at Faith and Fabric

Be sure to get the blocks you are interested in before the tour is over - many designers will stop offering the blocks for free at that time. Each designer is independently running their own site so please read their posts for specific information.

I have to admit that I went into this tour assuming all the blocks would be pieced - can you tell that's my favorite ;) But I hope you will make the time to try out some new techniques and discover some new designers too.

With Joy,

Sarah V.

It was back to school and full time teaching this week so I'm pretty happy with actually getting my fabrics picked out :)

I took a closer look at some of the half yards of white Alison Glass fabric I purchased this summer and then promptly cut this piece out for the background of this block. Can you see the needle and scissors? I'm going to place my appliqued tomato and strawberry so you can still see this needle. Stay tuned ;)

I knew eventually I wouldn't want to make a block for various reasons - having the time and/or having the patience for a technique being the main ones! I chose to make a churn dash block for last week's and made a tutorial if you'd like to make one too.

The week before was from  Laura Strickland of Orange Blossom Quilt Design Studio
Week 3 was Laura of Slice of Pi Quilts.
Week 2 was  Jen of  Faith and Fun Sew Much Fun

Here are my first 5 blocks; the pink sewing machine still needs to be stitched around but otherwise they are complete.

modified block week 4 Sew Much Fun Tour

My block is going to look a bit different than Laura's even though I love her block! I decided against the small squares for the background to help me get it done in a week (and you can see I still didn't!) I used some leftover light 2 1/2 " squares from different lines and sewed them together for my background. My plan for the sewing machine is to use this pink piece of fabric I bought from Alison Glass' scrap sale this summer.

Laura does a great job showing you different color options for this block and I encourage you to go check it out.

The week before was from  Laura of Slice of Pi Quilts.
