Design Wall Tuesday!

>> Tuesday, April 26, 2011

This is my second last giant {30.5 inches square unfinished} liberated churn dash to go.
It's the first time I planned and cut out all the fabrics for a whole giant churn at once.

I'm hoping it goes together quickly{and nicely!}

There's lots of design walls to enjoy over at Judy's this week. Here's the link.

Happy Quilting Time

>> Monday, April 11, 2011

I've got two days off work in a row and plan to put them to good use!
This was my main design wall last night - it's full now but you'll have to wait to see what I'm making because

It's a quilt using my block that will be in the next issue of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks!!!!

I'm soooooo excited:)

Here's a peek at the fabrics I've picked out - although now I've replaced this green with a brighter, 'limier' solid. I will have the top made in time for the blog tour, not sure if it will be quilted! The fabric combinations I was playing with on this post, unfortunately won't work as I need some 1/2 yard amounts and most of them were fat quarters. But, I'm really happy with how it's looking now:)

You can find more info about the new issue at Quiltmaker's blog.

While you're there you just might recognize the blog of a fellow Monday Design Wall blogger:

She's hosting an online quilt along with Quiltmaker. I just might be tempted to start another mystery!

On my little mini shammy design wall I have 3 modern clover blocks. This is April's Block Lotto block and I love all the setting possibilities. I definitely have plans to make some more for myself - if I'm not a lucky winner this month!

Full Design Walls this Monday!

>> Monday, March 21, 2011

My computer is still away, hopefully to be fixed soon as my husband needs his laptop back for work. But I am trying to carry on and even have something on my design wall this morning!

I put back up my folk art wallhanging because I have all of the pieces pinned to it and it was starting to not like being folded up on my table. I blogged about this project here.

Beneath is another Block 10 for the Layer Cake Quilt Along. This is made up of fabrics from the fat quarter collection I'm using called "Bejewled" by Susie Robins. You can click on the logo for the Layer Cake Quilt Along on my sidebar to see more. I also have a flickr set of the blocks that I've completed.

My second design wall {which will have to be removed as soon as the weather is nicer and we want to sit on the front porch!} has up the background for Pat Sloan's Happiness Key mystery. I bought her kit and love the fabrics. I will get to the lettering and the second step next month.

To see some more design walls, check out the links through Judy's blog. She's trying out a new link system and you can see a photo from each blog before you click!

Remember, tomorrow is the beginning of the Book-a-Round tour for Kay Mackenzie's new book. You can click to find out more on my sidebar. I'll be hosting a day of the tour HERE next week!!

Design Wall Monday - A New Start

>> Monday, February 28, 2011

My design wall is full this morning! The top block is Block 9 for the Layer Cake Quilt Along. I still need to sew it together - and make my second one! The fabric line is Prayer Flag by April Cornell. It has lots of paisleys and I love it!

The bottom of my design wall has all the cut out pieces for a little wallhanging. It's from the 1998 Quilt Sampler magazine. Yes, I did write 1998!! I have wanted to make this little quilt - actually ALL the projects in this issue - and finally rewarded myself by starting. It was designed by Jan Patek.

I had pulled the fabrics several months ago when Pat Sloan was doing her UFO busting tips. Now it is all cut out and I will work at pinning them onto the background so I can do this as handwork while watching the next sport on TV - hockey playoffs and baseball:)

My other design wall still has liberated churn dashes on it. I will not have this quilt done by Friday! But, I did finish quilting one more panel this morning. It measures 30.5 inches square {or close to it} That's 4 of 9 completed.

Still Churning - Design Wall Monday

>> Monday, February 21, 2011

My design wall this morning has a 15.5 inch liberated churn dash waiting for me. I am enjoying the discovery of different designs within each block which depend on fabric placement. For this one I've put the same blue in the centre of each corner triangle. Not sure yet what I'm going to do with the sides.

With my last large churn {30.5" unfinished} I started to place my fabric strips on angles and it made me think of a ribbon wrapping around the block.

Trimming the large churn left me with lots of fun strings to play with too!

I'm still looking for one more person to Pay It Forward to - check out this post for the details.

Play/Pause

>> Monday, January 31, 2011

Why "Play/Pause" this morning? My son has been down and out with a fever for the last 4 days and nights - and I have been awake for them all!
I have been staring at the buttons on the music player beside his bed more than I've been staring at my stash:) The "Play/Pause" button struck me as funny last night. I think that's where my quilting got stuck this week!

My design wall has the 6 cupcake pillow front waiting for me. It is my second Birthday Quilt Challenge project for the year.

Beneath the cupcakes is my cut out Block 7 for the Layer Cake Quilt Along. It's been like that since "Before the Fever". Hopefully it will be sewn together before Judy hosts another Design Wall Monday.

I have managed to finish the stitching on my first Birthday Quilt Challenge project of the year. I really enjoyed it! Only a peek for now because I still have to bind it and mail it off to the birthday boy - belatedly:( There just might be a little something extra in the package to make up for the lateness. . .

The "Pause" this week
gave me time to think about
why I quilt what I quilt
and how I want to
spend
my time and talents this year.

The "Play" part is just beginning!

Finishing and Focusing

>> Monday, January 24, 2011

My Design Wall this week has these 6 cupcakes up for my niece's birthday present.
I'm challenging myself to make my nieces and nephew birthday gifts that incorporate their age this year.
The cupcake is a free pattern from Stephanie at Loft Creations that I couldn't resist using as soon as I saw it.

I think I'm going to make it a pillowcase. I have lots of the pink with small polka dots {thanks, sis!} to use on the back, or I might cut strips from several of the fabrics for the back.

This morning I also finished up two more blocks for January's Block Lotto.

I also made another Lady of the Lake block. It's been officially decided around here that I need to add another row of blocks - 20 blocks. A few ladies from Pat Sloan's Quilt Mashup Forum have generously offered to make some for me. Thank You!!!
This quilt will be queen sized and on my bed for July when we celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary! Here's a link to how much I had done before out anniversary LAST year!!!

That's after I finish my String Quilt and my Sew Modern Bee quilt. I'm trying to finish some quilts this year - wish me luck:)

And all through the house - busyness reigns!!

One more gift still on the design wall.
I have some teacher gifts to finish up and cookies to bake too.

The smaller 'extra' design wall I put up is slowly getting filled with odd scraps that I don't want to lose. Not sure what possibilities are sprouting here, but at least I can keep an eye on them.

Design Wall x 2

>> Monday, November 29, 2010

Not much up and not much new on my design wall today. One more string block and you can see I'm working away at putting together some more scraps into a mug rug.

The newest addition is a second design wall! I put up another flannel backed tablecloth across the front door. You can see the door without the tablecloth here.
It has on it the front for the baptism pillow I'm making for next weekend. I have a plan now for the back - just need to make it!

I've got big plans for my second design wall next year. I'm planning to keep up one larger project to work on all the time, in addition to the little ones I seem to start almost weekly!

I really want to get back at creating this one.

You can see what's up on more design walls linked up at Judy's blog today.

Monday's Bits and Pieces

>> Monday, November 22, 2010

Lots of bits and pieces of different projects - again!

Two of this month's string blocks completed. Two to go.

Parts of different Christmas gifts - won't go into too much detail here so I won't reveal what they will be:)

The star block is called "Swamp Angel" from Diana McClun and Laura Nownes, "Quilts! Quilts! Quilts!". It's the beginning of a pillow I am making for a niece's baptism. The block will finish at 12 inches - I will need to add 2" borders for it to fit my pillow form.

There are other projects that I'm working on this week, mostly baking for my daughter's figure skating Festive Bake Sale on Saturday. Did you see the links in my sidebar for the 2 Christmas Cookie hops?! Great timing:)

The Start of Some Finishes

>> Monday, November 15, 2010

My Design Wall is full of ideas and pieces today. I really enjoy working on projects with different styles at the same time. I have never been good at working on only one project at a time!
Plus, I like to do the "leaders and enders" kind of sewing and with different types of projects going through the machine I'm less likely to mix up any pieces.

Sew, What's Up?

This time one is more muted tones and smaller piecing - the whirlygigs at the bottom measure 3 1/2" unfinished. The larger pinwheels above are supposed to be more whimsical in nature - they are 6 1/2" unfinished.

You can also see the beginning of a string block at the top - last week's string block! It's the first time all year I fell behind! I'm hoping to get to work on it today.

I'm still working away at my Season of Grace quilt. Here you can see the green I'm using for binding - wound around a wooden train whistle! It's what I could find when I finished pressing my binding on my big board downstairs in the playroom {so far no one's missing it!}
I did finish sewing all the loops onto the last of the stockings last night.
I might finish this quilt in time to put it in SewGalCal' s Christmas Quilt Show.

Monday's Cuttings

>> Monday, October 18, 2010

My design wall is waiting patiently for me. I've been busy cutting up all these fabrics for my Sew Modern quilting Bee.

November is my month. I'm asking my bee mates to make me 15.5 inch unfinished liberated churn dash blocks. In this photo you can see one with a larger 30.5 inch unfinished block. The plan is for me to make 5 big ones and surround them with sets of 4 smaller ones. I'm asking them to use their creativity to play with colour placement, strip size, direction, etc.

Then I'm asking for a cottage signature block. I'm including the white for the door for them to sign and asking them to be creative again and use up strips from the first block to make the cottages.

I just need to finish up my instructions,
buy big enough envelopes,
label
and MAIL!

Designs on the Wall for Monday

>> Monday, October 4, 2010

I finished a smaller liberated Churn Dash for my Sew Modern Bee Quilt.
I pinned it over a section of the large one I did a few weeks ago so you could see the difference. Now I'm really excited to see it become a quilt!
I have to finish cutting and packaging my fabrics this month to send out to my Bee partners. November is fast approaching!

My design wall space changed this week. It used to be like the photo above.

Now I have my large cabinet that used to be inside the closet beside my desk.
It covers up a fair bit of usable design wall.
Having it out of the closet has also added a lot more storage and organizing space.
I also turned around the cutting table my husband made me so I could use the front drawers again!!
(They're already stuffed!)
I had turned the table around when my son was smaller so he wouldn't go in the drawers - now I trust him to stay out :)

I added this smaller design wall to the right of my cutting table.
Can you guess what it is?
One of the 'knock off' shammies on the market.
My husband bought a set of three and complained about the lint.
I figured I could use one - it holds fabric great.
His comment was he might need it to clean the car.
I told him there was still an extra one in the cupboard!

My actual design wall today has these white squares on it you probably can't see very well.

They're waiting for me to iron this little pile of bright scraps to make some Variable Star blocks for Block Lotto.

It's using the same tutorial for these stars I made for Tong's month in my Sew Modern Bee.

This is what I did with my test block when I was making Tong's stars. I used up Christmas scraps and turned it into a stocking. It's a fun block that uses scraps so I'm hoping to make my maximum 9 blocks this month - and maybe even win!!

Making Monday Hop

>> Monday, September 27, 2010

Today is the beginning of the Falloween Blog Hop. My design wall has the white pieces up for a small liberated Churn Dash {you may have to click the photo to see it} and my pieces for the first Falloween project.

I am using my stash. There will be 10 projects through the hop. I'm not aiming to make all ten, but, this one has candy corn featured and I've been wanting something with candy corn for fall. Plus, it uses fusible fleece - which I bought THIS summer to do Gudrun's project from last year's hop (and still haven't made)!!

The project is a small table runner, which I might hang on the wall. I used the middle multi-coloured fabric to pick out the rest of my fabrics.

Less than 2 hours later, I have this much put together. Pulling apart the fusible fleece is like unraveling cotton candy!! But the procrastinator in me loves the fact that I will have all three layers together and the binding sewn on the front today!

Check out what the other design walls are showcasing today. Thanks again to Judy for keeping us all motivated to create on Mondays, and hopefully the whole week through.

One Large Liberated Churn Dash Block

>> Monday, September 20, 2010

Saturday Night

I made a mistake sewing my giant churn dash block together.
I must have flipped over the foundation piece on the way to the sewing machine.
It took me maybe an hour to decide that I couldn't live with it as a design "opportunity" -
I knew I would know it wasn't what I had planned!

Sunday Night

Much better.
I still have the three strips of blocks to join together.
You might be able to see, at the bottom of the middle one, the extra 1 inch strip I have to add. This block will measure 30 1/2 inches unfinished.
My middle panel is short by 1/2 inch.
I will make it larger then sew the strips together.

The Plan
{Kind of - the measurements are wrong in the photo}

This is the first of 5 large Churn Dash blocks for the queen size quilt I'm making with my Sew Modern Bee Blocks. My month is November when I'll be asking my Bee friends to each make me a 15 1/2 inch unfinished liberated churn dash block. The plan is to set them in groups of 4 between the large churn dashes to create a quilt that measures 90 x 90. I plan to quilt each 30 inch square separately then join them together.

Wish me luck!

Monday Morning Design Wall

>> Monday, September 13, 2010

My design wall this morning is covered with the building blocks for Pat Sloan's Lucky Charms sew a long. You can see how other people are progressing at the Old Red Barn flickr group. I'm trying to decide if I want to use the pink floral as my 1 inch inner border. That might get decided once I do the applique for the centre.

If you click to make this picture larger you can see the applique layout. I'm almost done tracing all the shapes onto fusible web. This will be something I tackle when my son's asleep and I don't have to worry about him being around the hot iron.

Of course there are some bright colours on my wall, too! The top blue and green are for my large churn dash block that I really should have done. This is for the quilt I'm making for my husband and will include blocks made during November, my month of the Sew Modern Bee.

Below that I started playing with some of my scraps and decided I might make some freeform log cabin looking blocks. For fun. When I finish quilting another project on my list.

The coloured strips are just leftovers I put up to look at. Not sure they will be anything but eye candy. Perhaps strips in a doll quilt?

Now that football season's here I do more hand sewing on Sundays. Blanket stitching on blocks or sewing down bindings. Hopefully by next Sunday I will have a lot more projects waiting for binding. Then I can get back to some piecing.

Enjoy some more design walls through Judy's links at Patchwork Times.
