Quilt Patterns Released in 2020

 

It was a great year for Sew Joy Creations. In spite of everything, or perhaps because of it, I was able to focus and release several patterns. Granted most were designed and written during 2019, but 2020 was when I started to share these designs with you!

Delightful Stars was the final pattern released in 2020. This one might get renamed as Autumn Sampler quilt as you can substitute blocks for the large print fabric squares.

It's been a joyful year here! I am grateful for all of the opportunities I had this year and look forward to embracing more in 2021.

Dazzle quilt pattern

The Dazzle quilt pattern was created during a design challenge.

Without giving too much away ;), I was playing with making a modern quilt. For me that means a quilt with large blocks, no borders and a dynamic tension created by colour, or space, or a combination of both. Wow, a lot to think about when designing. Yes and no; this quilt was made during a one month design challenge. The challenge was to make a block and set it in a pattern every day. It was the daily practice of play that resulted in this design!

I've mostly played with making this quilt pattern using solids or fabrics that read as solid from far away (or even just when squinting!) Partly because the design really shows itself when the piecing is so well defined by the separate fabrics, and partly because a lot of modern quilts are made with solid fabrics.

When I started to play with the fabrics in the Good Vibes line by Christa Watson, I used some of the lighter fabrics and used two light fabrics for the background fabric.

This line of fabric is great for its equal amount of light and dark prints. As much as I love this happy version of Dazzle, for the sew along I've chosen some of the bolder Good Vibes fabrics for a lap size version.

This pattern works well with a variety of types of fabric. The actual shapes in the quilt are very traditional. The quilter gets to choose how much contrast they want based on the fabrics. In fact, you could make each block with a different fabric - maybe from your stash - to add your own personal dazzle to this quilt.

Dropping In quilt pattern

This quilt pattern is called, Dropping In, and was made to feature the line of fabric called

No Cause for A-llama by Dear Stella. Llamas!

First, you really should take a look at the fabrics. There are llamas in full pose, headshots, and some bright watercolour florals as well as a print with cacti. I was inspired to create with these fun prints and wanted to have big enough areas in the quilt to show off and use the directional prints. 

I ended up playing with a log cabin and placing fabric to create capital letter "L"s for llama going down the quilt. I was pretty thrilled when Dear Stella picked this pattern as one of their project patterns.

These blocks are very easy to piece and work up into a quilt in no time. Plus I can see using a favorite line of fabrics or themed novelty prints to make it a great pattern to use for gift quilts.

 

{I had way too much fun playing with the Good Vibes fabric and the Dropping In pattern! So many possibilities and the 'vibe' of the quilt changes with each one.}

 

The Dropping In pattern includes 3 sizes, 

lap (48" x 60"- this is the size on the pattern cover)

twin (60" x 72")

and queen (96" x 96")

A modern quilt design with no borders and large blocks. This pattern invites the quilter to play with big prints and to explore creating movement across a quilt.

All Churned Up! A graduation quilt

This week is the last week of school where I live. My daughter graduated from high school this year. She went to high school out of town and we relied heavily on one of her closest friend's family to help us get through four years of after school theatre club and winter weather. Of course a quilt for her friend was in order!

I used two older lines of fabric designed by Janet Clare to make this twin sized version of my Churn, Baby, Churn baby quilt pattern. I wanted the quilt to remind the graduate of the northern lakes and landscapes she will leave when she goes off to university with the hopes of keeping home close to her heart.

What I really like about the finish is that the curved quilting I did really helps show off the churn dashes.

And that I got it done on time!

I made a pattern supplement to go with my Churn, Baby, Churn that gives the fabric requirements and a few tips on making this larger sized quilt. I made this one using a layer cake and some two different pieces of yardage because I didn't have enough of the one. 

Edited to say that the instructions to the larger size quilt are now included with the Churn Baby Churn pattern

A Bright Happy Version of Churn, Baby, Churn Baby Quilt

Before I put my Churn, Baby, Churn pattern up for sale I asked a quilting friend to test the pattern for me. She just happens to be expecting a new baby this summer too!

I took this photo from Kristy's post so you could see the two quilts together. Fun, eh! You can make the quilt with 36 - 10 inch squares from a layer cake or cut your own. Kristy used a mix of fabrics by Pat Sloan.

New Pattern - Churn, Baby, Churn

I'm proud to offer my first baby quilt pattern!
Let me introduce you to *Churn, Baby, Churn*

I designed this quilt as a challenge - a way to use only a layer cake for the top and my favourite block, the churn dash. Somehow my local quilt shop still had a layer cake of Sweetwater's Noteworthy laying around and I decided it was finally time for me to buy it and use it!

The piecing is easy; it's almost all straight line sewing with some half square triangles. Big quick pieces! And it's simple to make this quilt bright and busy, or calm and low volume, or for a specific gender depending on the fabric line you pick. Primary colours are great for baby quilts - this would be fun to make with black and white prints too!

I used a bright alphabet print for the back. My 8 year old son still has the toddler blanket I made my daughter in his bed! I know that little ones get attached to their quilts so I thought I would use a backing that would interest a toddler. It could also be the teacher in me thinking that you can never start too soon;)

This pattern works up quickly and would make the perfect gift to welcome a new little one in your life. You can find it in my online shop here.
