Hearts and Churns quilt Sew Joy Creations

I never used to make quilts with hearts on them - apparently that was years ago! Traditionally hearts on quilts were reserved for brides or babies. Not anymore! Heart quilts are more popular than those heart candies with sayings on them:)

I went through my projects and tutorials to put them all in one place for you to enjoy.

QUILTsocial heart wall hanging

One of my most recent heart projects is this wall hanging I made with selvages and bold fabrics for QUILTsocial. You can find the links to the free tutorial in this blog post:

I'm starting to see a selvage theme here too! This tutorial for a heart uses selvages that are sewn to one string of fabric. The string in the heart in the photo is the green with white polka dot strip.

These are fun to make! Check it out here  Selvage Heart on a String tutorial

Ummmm, more selvage hearts!

Perhaps it's because February is so early in the year and I always seem to be in a clean up and make do frame of mind that so many of heart projects are also selvage projects. Well, I'll just keep going anyway :)

I love this pillow project I called Upcycled Love. I turned a shrunken dress shirt into functional art!

The post also links to my Pockets of Love pillow cover. Yes, more selvage hearts. This one is a free pattern for my newsletter subscribers.

And there's another free project for newsletter subscribers that includes hearts and uses charm packs.
A set of placemats with a mini runner.

My latest heart project is the Hearts and Churns quilt. I love the churn dash block so it's only fitting I incorporated hearts and churns into one quilt block. This is a paid pattern available as a download from my online shop or also at Etsy.

I hope you found something here to inspire you to make something with hearts on it - maybe even try using some selvages to do it :)

Lots of  JOY,

Sarah V.

Quilt Tops of 2020

>> Wednesday, December 30, 2020

January - Winter Fun quilt top designed by Pat Sloan - more yardage bought and plan devised to make it larger; backing fabric also purchased

April - 2 Cheri Payne mini tops - also a star block from Darlene D'eon's scrap mystery quilt which has fallen by the wayside.

May - got the final borders on my Mashup Roosting Robin started several years ago

July - Rainbow Quilt Along using Prayer Flag jelly roll - will be center of quilt with 12 blocks from the Layer Cake Quilt along years ago added around it

Apparently these blocks are from 2010! I designed the basket block.

December - Hearts and Churns was designed using Sherry Shish's (Powered by Quilting) first signature line with Island Batiks. The pattern will be released in early 2021! Make sure you are signed up to my newsletter to be notified.

This was a smaller group than I thought! Guess that means I finished what I started this year! LOL I'm pretty sure there a couple of PHDs - Projects Half Done - but they may be harder to find photos of to document.

Stay tuned :)

With Joy,

Sarah V.

New Quilt for the Love and Kisses Blog Hop

>> Sunday, December 13, 2020

 Welcome!

Today I'm delighted to be part of the blog hop for Sherry Shish's signature line of fabric, Love and Kisses.

You might know Sherry better as the quilter behind Powered by Quilting. Sherry reached out to other quilt designers this summer to invite us to spread the joy of her having a signature line of fabric with Island Batik. I couldn't resist these happy colors and all the hearts.

I had so many ideas initially for what to make with this fabric that I hit overwhelm pretty quickly and couldn't decide. Once the fabric arrived and I saw the prints in person, I knew I had to design a new quilt pattern featuring hearts.

And, if you take a look around my shop you'll see that I had to include churn dashes too.

Thus, Hearts and Churns was designed.

The pattern is next on my list to write and will be out in the new year. It will be 1 of at least 2 patterns that are fat quarter friendly. Subscribe to my newsletter to be notified when it's released.

crochet pig Love and Kisses fabric

I couldn't resist bringing out this cherished crocheted pig from my early childhood. The hearts and colors of this fabric make it a great choice for making keepsake quilts for little ones. There's probably a few teens and big kids out there who would also appreciate the chance to wrap up in a quilt made with this fabric too.

The fabric is available now - you could have a Valentine quilt done in time for this coming year ;)

There are a few more designers sharing creations made with the Love and Kisses fabric this week:

December 14 - Kate Starcher of Katie Mae Quilts

December 15 - Linda Bratten of Linda B Creative

December 16 - Anja Clyke of Anja Quilts

December 17 - Marian Pena of Seams To Be Sew

December 18 - Sherry Shish of Powered By Quilting

Sherry is also giving away some fabric (for US residents only) and patterns (open internationally) on her blog.
