Quiltblockmania September 2022 - Occupations

>> Tuesday, September 6, 2022

Welcome to Quiltblockmania release day for September 2022!

quiltblockmania September 2022 teacher block Sew Joy Creations pencil and mug patchwork block

September 2022 #quiltblockmania theme is Occupations. My block is for teachers, which is my occupation when I'm not designing quilt patterns :)

Even in this technological age, there's a moment everyday where a pencil is required. And honestly, I always have a cup of coffee nearby too - most teachers will tell you they only get to drink it when it's lukewarm. I hope this block reminds you of a favorite teacher or inspires you to get back to basics and enjoy learning something new!

There are many designers offering blocks this month. Visit their websites to find more blocks to create a Wedding Sampler quilt or maybe even find a new pattern to buy. Blocks are free this month, but designers may request you sign up for their newsletters (like me) and others may make the blocks a paid item after the month is over. Please read and respect each designer's choice as we really do enjoy designing blocks for you.

February Quiltblockmania - Courthouse Steps

>> Tuesday, February 1, 2022

Welcome to Quiltblockmania release day for February 2022!

This month's theme is wedding and I went with modifying a traditional pieced block - Courthouse Steps.

Courthouse Steps block Quiltblockmania Feb 2022 Sew Joy Creations

This traditional block takes a modern look by varying the width of the steps. Whether you prefer piecing or applique, the Courthouse step block offers quilters many setting options. See the end of the pattern for one using alternate plain blocks where you can showcase free motion quilting. Enjoy!

Quilt Block Mania ~ Show up and Shine!

>> Tuesday, August 4, 2020

Welcome!

This month the #quiltblockmania theme is Back to School. Hopefully, yes!
But regardless of where we are, having confidence in our abilities makes learning a positive adventure. I named my block, Show up and Shine!

This month - today actually! - is the beginning of my first ever sew along. Talk about a learning journey! Being ready is only one part; having the tools and materials to start a new project is important to having a good experience and the projecct turning out. But being mentally ready is just as important: mistakes will be made. Opportunities for growth will be found :) How you respond to these opportunities shapes how you respond the next time. As a teacher, part of my job is finding what each student is already good at and using it to grow their confidence. With confidence comes the willingness to take risks - where all new learning starts.

You're invited to join my Sew Along! Click over to this post for the first post.

You could also try another of my patterns or check out my tutorials to find something new to try!

#quiltblockmania Back to School Series

Show up and shine block quiltblockmania Sew Joy Creations

This block incorporates what I love about quilting and how I get ready to try new things. I love patchwork blocks and the churn dash block was the first block I made in my first internet block swap in the late 1990s. I still find new ways to incorporate it into my quilt designs.

When I think about school for me as a child, it was always about getting those gold stars! And while I still think wanting to do well in school is a great thing, I know it's even more important to feel good about yourself before the star shows up. The star in this block is a reminder to enjoy the process too.

I added the words to the center of my block using the built in fonts on the PFAFF performance icon. You could do the same with your machine, or hand stitch them, or leave them off altogether :)

Summer Sampler Setting

I designed this setting to go with last month's blocks. You can find them here - Summer Series
My block is still free, but several others may not be any longer. Take a look and see!

I recoloured the setting with colours to match this month's palette. Like I said, I love the churn dash block!

Quilt Block Mania ~ Sleeping under the Stars

>> Tuesday, July 7, 2020

Edited to fix some of the designer links and to provide a second way to download my block!

It's time for some Summer Fun! Today several pattern designers are sharing FREE quilt blocks all based on the same colour theme and topic of Summer Fun.

Sleeping under the Stars

quilt block mania pieced block Sew Joy Creations sleeping bag friendship star

I named my block Sleeping under the stars!

Summer in Northern Ontario, Canada for me is about
connecting with nature - even at night!
I love being up late and outside watching the stars in the summer.
This block is inspired by camping out with friends under the stars.
Easy enough to share with a young quilter or to make blocks with friends
- the star featured in the block is a friendship star!

Please take a look around while you're here and see how nature and colour inspires my quilting.

I have several patterns available,
and a newsletter
where I have a growing resource of freebies.

You can also find me at QUILTsocial.com where I contribute blog posts and free patterns.

And I'm hosting my very first sew along in August!
More details soon (a good reason to join my newsletter ;) ! )

Let's get back to the summer fun!

Sit'n Sip wall hanging pattern
This is my summer inspired pattern from a few years ago. It's all patchwork piecing. It's still my happy place. You can find this pattern in my online shop - My Happy Place

Fabric for the blocks

I was inspired by the theme, but stumped for fabrics in my stash to go with the colour theme.
You can see the colour theme here.

Then I spotted this Blush and Blue Bundle from Needle Crafts + Studio and I knew I'd found my fabric :)

You can find this bundle of FIGO fabrics and more in the shop! I used some for my block and have leftover to make more blocks!

All of the designers are sharing blocks using the same themes which means you can make blocks from several different designers and they will all look good together!

Summer Sampler Setting

I love making sampler quilts and thought it would be fun to design a layout to put some of these blocks together into a quilt. The Summer Sampler Setting does just that.

sampler setting 12 blocks Surf and Sand

Doesn't it just *look* like summer at the beach?!  This setting will use 12 of the blocks you collect and make from the designers today - or any 12 1/2" blocks you would like to use - and make a generous size lap quilt. Lap quilts are great in the summer after a day in air conditioning or outside as you watch the sunset.

In addition to the instructions for making this setting in 4 sizes, three options for using the setting are also included, making this a pattern to use again and again.
