Quilt Block Mania - Movies Theme with a Free Block

>> Tuesday, July 7, 2026

Welcome! This month's Quilt Block Mania Theme is Movies. I decided to join in with my Decked Out Star Block.

Going to the movies can be a dressing up affair - use some fancy, sparkly prints to showcase the star in this block.

The star could also remind you of the Walk of Fame and movie stars getting to put their handprints in a star in Hollywood.

There is also space in the center square where you could embroider the title of your favourite movie or the name of your favourite movie star.

Two patchwork units

There are two different patchwork block units that make up the larger Decked Out Star block.

First are the Square in a Square blocks.

There is a tiny bit of waste here when you trim the corners.  Are you a team keep the tiny cutoffs or team toss them?  I used to keep them - until they overwhelmed me in a little pile and I decided life is too short to save all the bits. Now, if I was trimming at a guild sew day, I know there is a quilter there who will rescue my bits! LOL

The second patchwork block is Flying Geese. The pattern guides you through the method of making them 4 at a time.

I will use the Studio 180 Wing Clipper ruler when I'm making my own flying geese units, but when I write patterns I continue to use traditional measurements for my fabric pieces so that no specialty ruler is required. You can, of course, change the size of the pieces and use the ruler - adjust the pieces so the finished size geese blocks will be the same as in the pattern.

That said, even with traditional sized pieces, I do trim with the Wing Clipper. The lines help ensure I trim accurately and don't cut off any seam allowances.

The only other tip I have when sewing the Flying Geese units is when you are sewing on the second triangle to put it through the machine with the geese fabric on the bottom. The picture shows what I mean - it's easier to feed under the needle and less likely to get caught in the feed dogs.

However you interpret the star, I hope it inspires you to enjoy a good movie!
