D4P Stocking Tutorial

>> Saturday, September 25, 2010

I know it wasn't one of the ones I previewed here,
but it's the one I made this week!

You can find the stocking template here.

Enjoy!

You will need 9 and a 1/2 charm squares to make the front of the stocking.
You can do what I did and cut 5 inch squares from your Christmas stash.
You will also need enough fabric to make the back of the stocking.
Use the stocking template as a measurement guide to make sure you have enough fabric.
{I didn't make a lining for this stocking. If you want to, you will need fabric for that, too!}

Sew together 4 charms squares with light and dark above/below each other like pictured.
You will want contrast between your squares to emphasize the design.

To make the 4 patch into a Disappearing 4 Patch,
please click to this tutorial on Caryl's blog.

Step One

Step Two

She's given me permission to link over to use her method of fabric placement for the patch. Thanks, Caryl!

Sew your first D4P block together.
At this point I lay my block over my template to make sure the fabric covers it completely.

Create your second D4P block like the first, with an extra 1 inch cut at the bottom.

Sew all of the second D4P to the first one. Now all that's left is to make the 'toe' of the stocking.

Sew one long edge of the half charm square to the remaining charm square. You can choose which direction your stocking will "point" by sewing the unit to the left or right of your D4P unit.
Sew this unit onto the bottom of your D4P unit.

The front of your stocking is complete!

Cut out the stocking back, REVERSED, include seam allowance.
Layer the front of the stocking with the back, RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER. Pin together.

Sew with 1/4 inch seam allowance around the stocking.
Cut away the excess fabric.
Turn your stocking right side out.
To finish the top edge, fold under 1/4 inch then fold under 1/4 inch again to have a clean edge.
*You can include a hanging loop at this point. I like to use ric rac.
Top stitch around the top of the stocking, with a decorative stitch if you like.

Yay! One D4P stocking complete.

Lucky Charms Progress

>> Wednesday, September 22, 2010

I went to my local quilt store and picked out threads to match my applique on the Lucky Charms sew along top.
I'm trying really hard on this project to keep things matchy matchy!
If you click on the photo you can see that I didn't pick out green thread for my stems and leaves, but a shade of light brown.
No purple either - it's more a deep burgundy merlot.
The pink is more of a fuschia.
The trick is to pull out a single strand of thread and lay it on your applique.
The single thread is the actual amount of the colour you will use on your project.
I saw Pat Sloan do this and am really glad I did because NONE of the green threads were working for me!

I'm planning to do the applique when I quilt the three layers together.
This Friday Pat Sloan will post the next step.
This week I pieced together a 40 inch square backing.
The pink is from Granny's stash, the purple with pansies came from my sister.

Houses for all Seasons

>> Tuesday, September 21, 2010

I made this house door hanging for my sister. It will fit down the linen closet door she is using in her new sewing space.

I made one house for each season using up some scraps. In this closer shot of the 'spring' house you might be able to see my free motion daisies in the sky. {click on the photo to take a closer look} I took the cue from the daisies in the fabric I used for the chimney. In the outer border I did two wiggly lines to frame the house blocks.

I used Nanette's cottage tutorial to make these blocks.

This month's Block Lotto block is houses too.

And Cherri House has a free house block out as well!

One Large Liberated Churn Dash Block

>> Monday, September 20, 2010

Saturday Night

I made a mistake sewing my giant churn dash block together.
I must have flipped over the foundation piece on the way to the sewing machine.
It took me maybe an hour to decide that I couldn't live with it as a design "opportunity" -
I knew I would know it wasn't what I had planned!

Sunday Night

Much better.
I still have the three strips of blocks to join together.
You might be able to see, at the bottom of the middle one, the extra 1 inch strip I have to add. This block will measure 30 1/2 inches unfinished.
My middle panel is short by 1/2 inch.
I will make it larger then sew the strips together.

The Plan
{Kind of - the measurements are wrong in the photo}

This is the first of 5 large Churn Dash blocks for the queen size quilt I'm making with my Sew Modern Bee Blocks. My month is November when I'll be asking my Bee friends to each make me a 15 1/2 inch unfinished liberated churn dash block. The plan is to set them in groups of 4 between the large churn dashes to create a quilt that measures 90 x 90. I plan to quilt each 30 inch square separately then join them together.

Wish me luck!
