10 years and Counting

My Lady of the Lake blocks are on the design wall - again! Perhaps for the last time!!

Last time I had them out I pinned them together in sets of four. This time around I'm sewing the four blocks together - and finishing the quilt!

I think I have now acquired enough lily pad lake {a la Monet} fabric for backing. I will be quilting each set of four, then attaching them to each other.


The completed pile is growing. Less than 10 more sets to go! I hope to have this one ready for Christmas - this year! It's only taken me almost 10 years to finally finish it!!!

A Quilt For Me

My Birthday Baskets Quilt

This is the first quilt I have ever made for my house. I have been quilting for almost 14 years now. I finished it for my birthday THIS year!



It started over 2 years ago when I started making these basket blocks for a quilt for a new niece. But, I'm being honest here, I loved the blocks too much to give them away. Even to a nice home. I found the block on the infamous Quilter's Cache. {spend some time there - great blocks for quilt bees}




Then I needed to convince myself I could make a large quilt and finish it with my domestic machine. Georgia Bonesteel's excellent quilt-as-you-go method gave me confidence - and her book excellent instructions. {Click on the photo of her book to go to her website store where she has it on sale!}

I made my quilt in 3 panels. Here my cat, Mogli, is testing the width of a panel for me. This quilt was made for the wall though, so he doesn't get to snuggle with it normally.





I made this quilt to fit in our entry way. I used fabrics from my stash - some of them really old fabrics. I was inspired by antique quilts to come up with this setting arrangement - sashing with no borders.

I quilted each panel separately then sewed them together. You can sort of see here the zig zag effect I almost achieved!





I even tried really hard to match up the binding with the sashing strips as it went around the quilt.






For the backing I used the rest of the gold sashing fabric and this turquoise floral basket print.

This quilt doesn't look like most of the quilts I make.
But the tradition behind it is what started me in quilting.
I love getting to look at this quilt when I wake up in the morning!

Hopping Along on Monday

My Bunny Lady quilt is still on the design wall. You can see I have sewn together one row - the third row from the left. It's slow going this week as it's March break and we are focussed on taking off wallpaper and putting on paint in our basement. I'm also at the point with this quilt top where I need to decide if I'm going to quilt it in rows then put it together or quilt the top as one piece. I use my domestic machine and am not really patient with the pushing and pulling of machine quilting - and making it look nice too!

Last week I worked on a bag and tea cosy for my mom's birthday. I also have to finish up my blocks for a mystery project with a deadline. And I wanted to play with all those jeans this week! We'll see what the week brings. This is when I'm glad I have my own little space where I can leave things out to work on . Fifteen minutes is alot of sewing time if all you have to do is turn your machine on and sit down to it.
