Blanket Stitching Dragonflies

>> Thursday, June 20, 2013

I have been doing a little bit of handstitching on the front porch, when it's been warm enough and my fingers don't get too cold. I have all of my dragonflies prepped. The dragonflies and the project are from Pat Sloan's book, New Ideas for Applique. It's chock full of ideas! This one grabbed my attention first.

I've got one stitched.
I think the Stonehenge fabrics that I've been saving are perfect for this project.

You can see in this photo that I used two colours of embroidery floss together on the wings. I'm going to try different colour combinations on the other dragonflies.

Update on Halloween 1904

>> Monday, February 25, 2013

I'm supplying at the local First Nations school almost full time now. This means I have little time at home when my brain is functioning for some quality quilting time. I finally got the hst border on this block. It has the top border pieces added to it as well now.

I did take some time last month(?) to rearrange my space and get all the parts ready for quilting my Halloween 1904 panels. On the back sideboard you can see the panel backs all cut. To the left are the strips that will be added to the panels that are the outside edge - this will add a border to the back of the quilt. The front green card table holds my next panel ready for quilting.

Under the table is my first quilted panel - the bottom left of the quilt. Underneath that is the pile of batting cut to the different sizes I need for the different panels.

I still have more blocks to complete, but I am ready to work on this quilt from every angle. Now it's just to make the time to sit down and quilt!

Tent Flap Star Quilt Top and Outtakes

>> Sunday, February 12, 2012

This is a UFO from last February. The block is named 'tent flaps' and was designed by Pat Sloan.

I pulled the blocks out this past week and decided I wanted at least the top made before my birthday at the end of this month.Here's a photo of the blocks arranged how I am putting them together - into a star. {You can really see my long entrance way window rectangles in this light}

I had played with my block arrangement and taken some photos to keep track of the options.
This is a really busy looking group of pinwheels. Outtake 1.

Outtake 2. I liked the focus on the print, but the setting doesn't have enough focus for a wallhanging. It would be a fun quilt top though.

Outtake 3. I don't have enough blocks or fabric to keep this pattern going. You'll see some of this option did make it into my final product.

I call this one a Modern Outtake. I like this setting, but it's not the one I chose. And those long strips of yellow squares are no longer available - used up in another project I guess!

Tent Flap Star

I'm really happy with how it's turned out so far. The borders were a bit tricky and I wrestled a bit with lining up the corner squares, but I did it!
I don't have any backing fabric selected for this one so it will get added to the small pile of finished tops.
I do know that I'd like to use orange or a fun stripe I have as the binding!
