Studio vs. Storage - Place vs. Space

>> Tuesday, October 9, 2012

I hope my fellow Canadians enjoyed the long weekend - and some turkey too!
Last week I was back at improving my new space. You can see on the left wall a new addition - a great buffet unit for storage and horizontal space.

I do have this support pole to work around, but right now it works out as a space divider with my ironing board against one side and now this storage space on the other. I have even set up a card table where the Hello Kitty storage box is in this photo for pinning quilt tops.

This bookcase is to the right of my cutting table. The bin and the basket on the second from the top shelf are my drop zone for scraps while I'm cutting and current project scraps divided into plastic baggies. I've been reading and thinking a lot about how to organize my space to use it to my best advantage. I'm finding the difference between a STUDIO as a place to have tools and supplies accessible as a vision I'm aiming towards versus a STORAGE space where I quilt. Can you hear the difference in the 2 sentences - one is definitely more productive!
So these shelves, while organized, got a makeover.

See the difference? More fabric on display to see and use. More space to sort current projects. Now I can also see that my current pile of fabrics that are waiting to be designated for projects need coordinating partners to play with!

A place to be creative is a wonderful gift of space.

Hopefully I'll get some time in my STUDIO today.
Enjoy every stitch!

You have nice light in there. Love the buffet - bet it's a great storage spot.

I have been working on organizing a new studio space and, so, can especially appreciate the progress you've made. Storage is my biggest challenge–now that I have the space for EVERYTHING, I just need to find a place for it ... I've been haunting Good will and the Habitat Re-Store and I feel like I'm getting close ...
