Joy Framed Wall hanging tutorial from 100 Blocks volume 13

>> Tuesday, May 3, 2011

Welcome to my blog and my post for the Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Issue Vol.3 Blog Tour Giveaway! Please feel free to look around my blog. I enjoy creating with bright fabrics and traditional patterns. I have been quilting for 14 years now. You can read about my story here.

Here is my block: Joy Framed #254
Here's a wallhanging I made to show the block set beside itself. It's not quilted yet. I plan to stitch around the flower petals when I put the layers together. I've added an additional border and altered the fabric placement in the outer squares. Here's a quick photo tutorial to recreate your own wallhanging with my block: The wallhanging is 30 inches square. You will need 1/2 yard of the fabric I used for the star triangles {blue fabric} You will also need 1/2 yard of the inner block fabric {orange fabric} The squares are made of 2 different fat quarters {red and green} For the flower petals you can use an 1/8 yard of fabric {white} and I used scraps of black for the flower centre {black} I used fabrics from 3 different lines by Pat Sloan {block #212!} plus the lime green Kona solid. I KNOW my colours are Bright - this wallhanging would look lovely in a variety of styles - country, floral, all solids - so use what YOU like! Note the fabric placement is the same in each block. You will need to make 4 blocks.
Sew blocks together.
Use the directions given for making the main block in the Quiltmaker issue, and make 2 more fast flying geese using the same fabrics as for the blocks. You will also need 10 more red squares and 10 more green squares.
Sew together the left side border and attach to your blocks.
Sew together the right side border and attach to your blocks.
Sew together the top border and attach.
Sew together the bottom border and attach.
I haven't added a binding yet, but you I plan on using the blue fabric that created the stars in the wallhanging. You can stitch around your applique now - or later. I have yet to decide if I'm using a blue thread, or a white thread around my petals. I'd love to see any creations YOU make with my block. Please feel free to email me a photo to the address in my profile - or add it to my SewJOYCreations flickr group for others to enjoy as well.

This is my first visit to your blog and my first thought was how nice your header is. Then I find out it's your block! Daisies are my favorite flower and I love seeing them used in quilts.

Hi Sarah Vee, I'd like to congratulate you on a beautiful design. It's fresh and vital and very friendly just like a garden. I noticed the big butterfly on the original photo and got a lot of help from seeing your design development.
