Piecing Life Together

It's been a week of travel for me. Finding myself in unfamiliar places. This cabin was along the side of Hwy 69 which we took Tuesday to get from the north to southern Ontario.

We traveled to be with family in Simcoe and bury my grandfather. Less than a block from the funeral home this giant quilt block greeted us.{ We skipped walking in the park and stepping in all the goose droppings from the Canadian geese having a stopover on their travels.}

 Thursday lunch time and this was my view. Almost two hours in a school bus up a logging road and into Sagamok First Nations land. I was supply EA and found myself here at the Fall Harvest.
Found myself in the story.
Found the solace and the circle.
The land and animals and people in harmony.
 Found the beginning of the journey at the end.

Spent a little time yesterday getting back in touch with my fabrics.
I made the pieced block by Harding Hill designer Jessie Kurtz for the Glorious Autumn block party.
I'm really tempted by the bargello block by Amy Gay.

You can catch up on this week's blocks, including mine, by clicking over to the main page of the Glorious Autumn block party at the Quilting Gallery.

Pumpkin Patch Block - Glorious Autumn Block Party Day

Glorious Autumn Block Party and Super Deals for Quilters

Welcome to my block day of the Glorious Autumn Block Party.
I'm glad you're here!  If you started over at the Quilting Gallery site, then you've probably already read a bit about me. I'd like to thank Michele for putting all of this together. She has great vision AND great execution!
 While you're at my blog, feel free to check out my tutorials page.

 Now, onto my block!

My block is called Pumpkin Patch.

I used scraps when I was first designing this block and figuring out the pumpkin part of the block. You can make your block using scraps and make each side of the block with different fabrics, or use one fabric for each colour for a more controlled look.

I have one tip I'd like to share here with constructing the block to make sure you don't miss it! The tiny little corners to create the pumpkin unit are only 1 inch square. When you go to join the side strips to the pumpkin unit, I recommend putting the pumpkin unit on top when you guided them through your sewing machine. Your little half square unit may not be perfectly square, but by using the side strip as your guide, you should be able to keep the seam and block straight. And it's okay if you're pumpkins don't have perfectly angled corners - pumpkins aren't all perfectly the same anyway!

I've had fun making some of the pieced blocks that have already been featured in the block party. You can go back to the main Glorious Autumn Block Party page to find all of the blocks.

There will be 2 more blocks featured this week and many more before the party is over in December. AND there's special quilting deals too!

Glorious Autumn Blocks

I am delighted that I found some YELLOW fabric to go into these blocks! I was cutting up my Christmas scraps and found some lime green and this yellow that I'm not going to keep with my holiday stash. It works wonderfully with the yellow in my brown print, don't you think? I might even paint a wall in my kitchen this colour I'm so happy! You can find Rochelle's block pattern over at the Quilting Gallery's main hosting page for the Glorious Autumn Block Party.

The yellow also made it into this block by Kimberly Jolly. You can see by looking at her block pattern that I added more colours to my blocks. I'm using mostly scraps for these blocks and I didn't have enough of the brown to make all 3 sides of each corner brown. So I added the yellow! You can see I also used a little bit of yellow in one other spot - I guess that makes this a 'maverick' block. Making do can be a fun challenge {wink}

I did get a BONUS 's' block out of Kimberly's block. I don't like to waste fabric if I can help it, although I am getting better at discarding tiny bits.  This one will get added to my little pile of 's' blocks which will someday make me a quilt.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend.
